It's the Economy Stupid! (Or Is It?)
When I first began in this business I had no problem getting my rate and stayed as busy as I wished to be. Oh, for the good old days!
I have not revised that amount and I don't find it to be unreasonable at all; however, at least judging from my email responses and phone calls, I am waaaaay out of the price range of most of the guys who contact me. In fact, I have run a few specials, discounting an hour of my time by $50.00 and the respondents are STILL complaining that they can't afford it.
This issue seems to be unique to a certain advertising venue that seems to have been taken over by 20-somethings with awful cell phone pics and even worse text. Okay, I understand that. More bang for the buck, so to speak. I understand hobbyists wishing to stretch their entertainment dollars as much as possible in these dreadful economic times. I also get it that comparing myself to a 20-something is like comparing apples to oranges so I'm not doing that. It's fruitless (ha, ha!). I cannot (and have no desire) to compete with the youngsters.
What bothers me is when a fellow mature provider in my area complains vociferously about the low-ball rates and how such low-ball rates are ruining business for everyone else, yet turns around and discounts her one-hour session to $100.
I believe that the more established mature ladies should stick to their guns. There aren't as many of us and we are sort of a niche market. I have lost both clients I have seen before and potential clients to this person because of price.
Maybe I'm just being stubborn but I refuse to lower my rates to $80-100 an hour. I believe I (and what I have to offer) am worth more than that.
If anyone out there has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Additionally, if I'm being unreasonable or unrealistic, please feel free to tell me so.
